As cat owners I think we all can agree that we’ve saw our cats do some weird stuff- am I right? Tula, my Russian blue cat, takes the cake home when it comes to unique behavior. One of Tulas favorite past times just so happens to be rolling around in her daddy’s shoes after he gets home from work. After watching her do this multiple times I started to research the possible reasons behind the behavior. Foot fetishes are popular but I did not know if animals could have them too. After doing some research I discovered that there’s actually some legit reasons why cats can obsess over feet like Tula does!
Reason one: A beloved owner’s scent is highly concentrated on their feet, and by extension, their shoes and socks, and this scent has a comforting effect on the cat.
Reason two: Shoes and bare feet capture scents from the ground people walk over, and so owners bring home a variety of interesting smells that tell the cat where they’ve been and what they’ve encountered along the way
Reason three: Cats have scent glands in their cheeks, and they rub their faces on shoes and socks to cover scents that have been acquired during outdoor excursions, thus re-staking their claim to these objects.
Reason four: Cats react to human pheromones in sweat much in the way they react to catnip (which has an ingredient that mimics feline pheromones)
So if your cat also displays some silly foot behavior sometimes- don't panic! Its more common than you think!
